In memoriam

Dr. Waksler died in April of 2024, but her writing lives on. This site remains as a testament to her life and work.

About Frances Waksler

I received my Ph.D. from the Boston University Department of Sociology in 1973. I taught sociology at Wheelock College from 1973 to 2008 and retired as Professor Emerita. Since my retirement I have continued my scholarly pursuits, writing books and articles and attending conferences.

Areas of Sociological Interest

Phenomenology has offered me a congenial philosophical framework for doing sociology. It counsels minimizing assumptions and letting the data speak for itself. Sociological topics that I have investigated from within this framework:

  • Face-to-face Interaction/Intersubjectivity
  • The Other
  • Sociology of Childhood
  • Sociology of Deviance
  • Sociology of Medicine
  • Sociology of the Family
